Clever, Cool, and Way Too Cute: The GeekGirlCon ’14 Costume Contest
Talk about tough decisions! The costume contest on Saturday evening at GeekGirlCon ’14 created plenty of Oohs and Aahs, as well as close calls about whose cosplay would be deemed the best. The nearly-impossible task not only fell into the hands of pre-selected judges, but also each audience member, as many winners were decided based upon applause.
Taking home the gold in the children’s costume department was Aurora, Child of Light. This win was no small feat, considering she was up against an adorable Doctor, genderbent Darth Vader, petite pirates, and so much more.

This year’s individual adult outfits were exceptionally tricky to decide between as well, but a homemade knit Yoshi outfit stole the audience’s heart — especially when she stuck out her tongue.

The judges’ choice for an individual adult’s cosplay went to a glowing, gorgeous Katamari Damacy costume. Success is practically guaranteed when you combine technology, fashion, and a nerdy fandom at GeekGirlCon!

The group winners of the evening, as selected by the audience? This duo impressively impersonating Welcome to Night Vale. Love that Glow Cloud!

The judges’ choice award for a group costume went to a trio of X-Men: Mystique, Magneto, and Xavier. Things got steamy and the crowd went wild when Magneto ripped off his helmet, swooped Xavier into his arms, and the unlikely couple kissed!

There are way, way too many jaw-droppingly-awesome costumes to highlight here, so be sure to check out all the awesomeness on the GeekGirlCon Flickr pool.
We hope you’re having a phenomenal, joy-filled Sunday, whether or not you could join the fun in person. Thank you for all your support of GeekGirlCon ’14 and beyond!
The third member of the X-Men group is Raven/Mystique, not Storm, but otherwise you’re exactly right about how awesome they were. Amazing contest! And Yoshi was effing adorable.
Thank you for catching that! I have updated it. Much appreciated — and I’m so glad you enjoyed the costume contest! Yoshi was indeed insanely awesome.
[…] There were So. Many. Daleks. This particular Dalek was made by a con volunteer, and it was remote-controlled. It would rove around the con, and it even had built in music to make it extra-menacing as it scooted along. The scope also moved, which was amazing. I was also a huge fan of how many parents dressed their kids as Daleks. If I’m ever a mom, you can bet your bottom dollar my kid will be spending a great deal of Halloweens dressed as a Dalek. As for the rest of the con’s cosplay, my camera failed me, so I didn’t get the stellar cosplay shots I had planned on getting. So, if you want to check out some of the truly awesome cosplay featured at GGC (because there was a lot), go here and here. […]
