Featured Contributor Paula Burrows Shares Her World
Following her introduction as another of our GeekGirlCon ‘19 Featured Contributors, we asked Paula Burrows to share a little bit about her world in another installment of our Q&A series.
Paula’s acting credentials include TV series such as The Dangers of Online Dating and Unspeakable, but I was introduced to her work as the voice of Rayla, a Moonshadow elf from the animated series The Dragon Prince on Netflix. In this fantasy series, Rayla joins two human princes in trying to save their world from war. Paula’s performance gives Rayla a full range of emotion—serious one minute and dripping with sarcasm the next. Paula’s vocal prowess really makes Rayla’s story believable.
Read on to find out what her absolute dream role is, what stories she loves, and most importantly, which Hogwarts House she belongs to!
What got you started in acting? Was it challenging to transition to voice acting?
From a young age, I had always wanted to be a performer, but it felt like an irresponsible path to pursue. After high school, I went on Rotary Exchange to Japan, which had always been one of my dreams. It was the best year of my life, which made me realize that I wanted to keep pursuing my dreams, so I went to Theatre School.
I was lucky enough to be submitted for voice acting auditions, which got me on the path. I also took classes at On The Mic in Vancouver to help me prepare!
What drew you to the character Rayla?
Her strength, empathy, and altruism mixed with a dose of awkwardness and sarcasm.
How did you prepare to play an elf assassin?
An elite school for elf assassins. I’m sorry, it’s all very hush-hush.
Anything in particular that excites you about the fandom surrounding the show? The passion and imagination. The fandom is so empathetic and clever. I’m always surprised and delighted by the theories and art that comes my way.
What was one of your most influential acting experiences to date?
My co-stars on The Dragon Prince have had the biggest impact on me. They are all so hardworking and diligent that I’m constantly motivated to try my hardest.
What is your absolute dream role?
I would love to play a villain. I’m often cast as the nice girl, so it would be fun to explore another side of myself.
Are there any stories or characters that were particularly important to you growing up?
I’ve always loved stories of exploration and fantasy. I was a huge Harry Potter fan. I loved Enid Blyton’s books. I loved Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. I also always loved reading historical fiction about girls in different times and countries.
What are your favorite fandoms at the moment?
OBVIOUSLY, THE DRAGON PRINCE FANDOM!
Outside of acting, what else are you passionate about?
Sewing! Sustainability! Languages!
You describe yourself as a “sewist” on Instagram. Any sewing projects in the works that you’re especially excited about?
Ooo well, I’m currently trying to make my first pair of trousers. High-waisted and forest green. If I succeed, I will wear them to the con! I even have a sewing Instagram…it’s very little, @paulas_pursuits
Favorite con you’ve attended?
Well, I’m writing this before attending GeekGirlCon so maybe ask me again, but the people in Honolulu were so kind and welcoming that it’s rating very highly for me. In terms of just being knocked on my butt with awe…the San Diego Comic-Con was unreal.
