Panel Highlight: Discussing the Media We Love

We are T minus three weeks to GeekGirlCon ‘17, and I’m already stressing over finding time for everything I want to do while I’m there. Panels make up a good 60 percent of my Con enjoyment, and I already have a list of must-see GGC panels with multiple alternates for some of the time slots, because there are too many that I’m excited about.

JC Lau already talked about the social justice panels we’ll have this year, so I get to tell you about our pop culture offerings. When life gets rough, I am all for escaping into the world of fiction, and with movies and shows like Hidden Figures, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Wonder Woman all being released in 2017, this has been a pretty good year for seeing women and women’s perspectives on screen. If you’re interested in discussing how far pop culture has come and how far it still has to go, you’ll be in good company at GGC ‘17.

The first GeekGirlCon panel I ever attended was Breaking the Bamboo Ceiling: Examining the Representation of Asians in Film, TV, and Gaming. At GeekGirlCon ‘17, GGC’s own Kristine Hassell is bringing the panel back for fresh look at how the representation of Asian characters and actors has developed over the last year and where it’s still lacking. The panelists will discuss Asian stereotyping, marginalization, and the road to racial equity. This was the panel that, in 2016, came up with the concept of John Cho, Werewolf Librarian, so you know it’s going to be good.

If you’re a Star Wars fan, you may have already heard about the upcoming documentary Looking for Leia, which highlights the lives and stories of women and girls in the Star Wars fandom. In her Looking for Leia panel, the film’s director and producer Annalise Ophelian, along with some of the documentary’s subjects, will discuss the process of traveling across the country to talk to female Star Wars fans and share an exclusive sneak peek of some behind-the-scenes footage.

Finally, for those of us who love Disney but cringe at its sometimes problematic content, there’s Dissecting Disney: Race, Gender, Sexuality in Children’s Film. University of Washington Tacoma Writing Studies lecturer Dr. Ariel Wetzel will be joined by UW Tacoma students in discussing the Disney princesses, Zootopia, and everything in between as they analyze the films and characters through an intersectional lens.

We’ll be highlighting more of the panels we’re excited about in the upcoming weeks, but in the meantime, it’s not too late to buy your GeekGirlCon passes in stores and online. You can also check out the GeekGirlCon ‘17 schedule for yourself and start making your own plans for how to spend the Con.

See you there!
