Panel Highlight: Fandom-Focused Fun!
With GeekGirlCon ‘16 fast approaching (72 days as of this posting!), exhibitors being announced, passes up for sale, and an even bigger and better space, now it’s time to start planning what panels you’ll hit up during the action-packed weekend. We’ve already highlighted a few panels spearheading science, and now it’s fandom’s turn!
Fandom! Fandom is what brings us together—today, at GeekGirlCon this October, or any other day of our lives. Fandom is the community that surrounds that which excites us, be it a movie, a book, a TV show, or sometimes even a carpet design. This year, at GeekGirlCon, it’ll bring even more of us together for some fantastic panels.
This year, the Star Trek franchise is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a new movie out in theaters and a new series being released next year. No matter what happens, Gene Roddenberry’s creation just keeps growing and getting more fans. At GeekGirlCon’s panel, the franchise’s failures and successes will be discussed, along with what needs to be addressed in the future by the series in order for it to maintain its progressive vision.
More retro and even more animated, we’ll also have a panel about everyone’s favorite glam rock soap opera, the 1980s cartoon Jem and the Holograms. What makes the show so memorable? How do the various adaptations stack up? Which band actually is the best? The hosts of the Jem Jam podcast will guide you through the glamor and glitter of this hit cartoon, all the while reaffirming that, yes, The Misfits’ songs are better.
Finally, don’t miss your shot to sit in on a Hamilton-themed panel at GeekGirlCon ‘16! Since its Broadway premiere last summer, Lin Manuel Miranda’s musical has become a worldwide phenomenon. Hamilton’s impact on the theater world and beyond has been immeasurable and has rocketed both the founding father without a father and the whole team behind the hit to new levels of fame. This panel will discuss a variety of topics relating to the musical, from the fandom it’s inspired to the attention it’s brought to the women in Alexander Hamilton’s life. Be sure to be in the room where it happens!
I don’t know about you, but I’ll probably be sitting in on every one of these panels—can’t wait to see you at GeekGirlCon ‘16!
