Alex Washoe

These days we are bombarded with endless reasons for despair. The rise of authoritarianism. The rolling back of civil rights for vulnerable minorities. The threat of climate change. Sometimes it’s almost impossible to believe in the future at all. It’s easy to slip into dystopian pessimism. To see only the worst in others, the world, even ourselves. This despair gives us the fatalistic universe of grimdark. Hopepunk is the opposite of grimdark. Hopepunk is the mindset of looking at the world and fully acknowledging all its darkness — but not giving up. Hopepunk is about struggle, about collective action, building community, forging alliances. Hopepunk is about continuing to fight for something better, even when everything looks hopeless, because the struggle itself is important. Hopepunk is about believing there is a chance — maybe a slim chance, maybe a ghost of a chance — the future can be better. And then fanning that spark into a flame that can light the world
