One of the many things that makes GeekGirlCon so unique is that our organization is made up of 100% volunteers. From the Agents at our convention to our Directors, everyone who puts on the event for 8,500+ attendees does it for the mission:
To celebrate and honor the legacy of women contributing to science and technology; comics, arts, and literature; and game play and game design by connecting geeky women worldwide and creating community to foster continued growth of women in geek culture through events.
It is a lofty and expansive (and slightly wordy) goal, but it is the commonality that brings a variety of geeks to GeekGirlCon. We possess a unique combination of skills, personalities, life experiences, fandoms, and Titratathon wins between us. It makes the whole experience dynamic for attendees year after year because we are never the same GeekGirlCon.
After a very long and difficult deliberation, our panels for this year’s convention have been decided, and now we are excited to show you what’s in store for you. Over the next few weeks, we will introduce some of the panels that will be featured at GeekGirlCon ’16!
One of the major areas of geekery that we love here at GeekGirlCon are the sciences. Although we have an amazing DIY Science Zone every year, and our #DIYSciFilm Livetweet events are always a hoot, we also have a huge range of science panels coming up this year. Below are a few samples of what you might see when you come to the convention on October 8 and 9.
At GeekGirlCon ‘15, we had over 150 volunteers spread across three floors, helping run panels, direct con-goers, hook up A/V equipment, and coach games of all sorts and sizes. This year, with four floors and all the extra people, space, panels, and fun that go with that expansion, we need even more volunteers.
With GeekGirlCon’s expansion to the fourth floor this year, there’s going to be more attendees, excitement, and chances for connections! Apply today to have your organization be one of the lucky few showcased in the GeekGirlConnections room!
GeekGirlConnections is a unique area in our con that creates a space for community leaders, producers, and organizations to connect with con-goers. Since GeekGirlCon values helping provide opportunities to women and members of every minority group, we’re excited to be able to put together a group of like-minded organizations looking for some new faces.
GeekGirlCon ‘16 is just four short months away, and that means we’re ramping things up behind the scenes. One important part of the con puzzle each year is our GeekGirlCon agents—members of our army of volunteers who do a range of amazing, important tasks at the con. Volunteer as an agent for GeekGirlCon ’16!
From answering questions to shepherding lines, from setting up A/V equipment to working as ASL interpreters, GeekGirlCon agents help make sure the con not only runs smoothly but also is a fantastic time for everyone involved.
Although GeekGirlCon is unique in a variety of different ways, you can enhance your con experience by helping us out! We have just opened our applications for agents (and special agents) for GeekGirlCon ’16!
What is an agent, you ask? Agents are our army of volunteer helpers who do a range of awesome tasks. From answering questions from convention attendees to setting up A/V equipment or leading games of pictionary, agents are there to make sure that our con runs smoothly and that everyone has an awesome time.
GeekGirlCon is entirely volunteer-run, and at convention time we really need help to fill out our ranks! Last year, we had 150-180 volunteer agents, and this year, with the fourth floor expansion, we’ll have room for more.
Interested? All we ask is that you’re over 16, are enthusiastic about our mission and are available to work for part of October 8-9. Apply here before July 1st! We’d love to have you at the con!
Despite huge technical difficulties, we couldn’t have asked for such amazing donors this year. In GeekGirlCon’s first year of teaming up with Seattle Foundation for its GiveBIG program, we raised over $12,000 with 115 donors!
As a 100% volunteer-run, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, these dollars are crucial and we can’t wait to give back to all our supporters at GeekGirlCon’16 on October 9th and 10th!
GeekGirlCon currently has 79 #GiveBIG donors so far. That’s almost 30 more than our original goal!
If we can make it to 100 donors our Board of Directors will donate an additional $500. Will you accept the challenge? Every donation counts, and helps GeekGirlCon #GiveBACK more to you!

One of my most treasured GeekGirlCon memories involves puppets. Okay, several of my favorite GeekGirlCon experiences involve puppets (looking at you, Puppet Joss Whedon – you handsy bastard), but this one in particular involves the spectacular Red Fraggle and her handler, the extraordinarily talented & singularly kind Karen Prell.
Karen had attended our inaugural con in 2011 for a sing-along screening of Labyrinth at the EMP. We’d held a sock-puppet making workshop earlier in the day, led by our Design Team, and she pointed out some key moments for puppet participation. (Seeing happy geek women & girls singing and smiling and waving sock puppets they made themselves packing the JBL theater was SQUEE.)
In 2013, celebrations for the 30th Anniversary of Fraggle Rock were taking place, and GeekGirlCon was presented with an opportunity to get in on the joy. The Jim Henson Company agreed to loan us Red – but she needed to be flown out with a handler and put up in a hotel. Red was certainly not a diva, and the expense was less than I’d predicted, but more than our entire programming budget.
The Executive Director and I decided it was something too special to not make happen.
