Wonder Women! The Untold History of American Superheroines

SIFF Panel: Women and Girls Changing the Game

A free panel in conjunction with the Seattle International Film Festival, the film Wonder Women! The Untold History of American Superheroines, GeekGirlCon, and Reel Grrls.

Sheroes exist. They can be found in the stories of comics, novels, film, television, and video games. They can also be found in real life – in mothers and sisters, community leaders, and media makers. How are women, both real and fictional, represented in American culture? Who influences and controls the media messages we receive about strong women – and how are they internalized by consumers? How do advocates of media literacy, as well as media makers themselves, subvert these messages or offer alternatives for empowerment through their own sheroic work?

Join the panelists below (and others to be announced) at this free Seattle International Film Festival special Festival Forum Discussion panel to explore these questions and more. Panelists include:

-Kristy Guevara-Flanagan: Director of Wonder Women! The Untold History of American Superheroines, which is screening at the festival

-Jennifer K. Stuller: Author of Ink-Stained Amazons and Cinematic Warriors: Superwomen in Modern Mythology and Programming Director for GeekGirlCon

-Daniel Tayara: Reel Grrls youth filmmaker
